Let's drop the green flag on this episode of the talent tank podcast with your host Wyatt Pemberton bringing you the best, fastest, most knowledgeable personalities in ultra for and off road racing. All right, all right. All right, everybody.
Wyatt Pemberton:Welcome back to the party. bench racing, Sturgis, South Dakota Bike Week. What's the name of this thing called the Black Hills throw down at the buffalo chip. And that's a that's a $10 phrase. Shannon, how you doing? Todd? How you doing? How's everybody else out there? I saw terhune on here. Some of the the parties here. I am. Currently drag racing all the way up. Just right now. Yeah, hold on. But I know Justin wicks hit me up. He wanted to make sure we got him up on the panel. Anyone else that you know, repeat offender. You like I see Nate Jesse up there. Jeremy's on there. Well, Mitch, sweet man, Mitch. How you doing, man? Good to see you. Oh, yeah. So here we go. We'll get into this. Anyone that's listening to this. Now as you know, live is probably not going to the race because tomorrow is going to be a busy day for those guys. But there we go. I don't know what is this? This like the fourth session? We've done like this fifth? I don't know. I've lost track. Definitely more than four. I'd say at this point. I think they're, I don't know. I kind of dread them. But then when we do them. I'm like, God, that was so much fun. I had such a blast.
Unknown:I don't agree with that. I would agree with that. Yeah, and honestly, this is the one of all of them this season. This is the one that I'm having the most FOMO over I'm not gonna lie. I'm having some serious FOMO over this one.
Wyatt Pemberton:When you get tagged I don't know if you were tagged in but I got tagged in like all the the motorcycle pics like everyone that was hauling their their Harley's up with them, you know, like the shipping company and I was like, God, not that I need a Harley. But yeah, I mean, you're talking about, like, what you're talking about Sturgis. You're talking about the biggest bike rally in the world. Looking at you know, I think the population of Sturgis is like 6900 or something like that. It's it's a pretty small number 6800 and they're expecting attendance somewhere between 700,000 and a million people in that town this week. How awesome is that?
Unknown:I love it. I love it. I mean, I I'm involved with four corners motorcycle rally, I'm already having envy in the sense that the guy that I helped put on four corners motorcycle rally in Durango with over Labor Day keeps sending me pictures of ultra for people with him and I'm like, hey, that's where my people so it's like a cross section now between what I've done with motorcycle events and with ultra for being there, and you know, Kid Rock is playing on Sunday, which is another thing that I'm a little having a little bit of FOMO over for sure.
Wyatt Pemberton:Yeah, I I don't know I so here's my thing is I look at like, like what this race looks like, right? It's a it's a West race. It's a North race and going through you know, going it's trying to figure out where everyone kind of sits in the points and like, Who's Who is this race important to realize ultra for doesn't even have the North series points. Like you can't even like sort by North Point. You can sort by east or west. So I'm not saying that they've marginalize the North series but you Bailey Cole 140 400 up there. Which you cinches first 4400 race when you When was that? I mean that was June, early June late. I mean it seems like a long long time ago when we had that Montana race seems like a long time ago. Properties car again. Right. And then my next thing that I was looking for you know since then, we had Tennessee and we're gonna talk about Tennessee for sure that was a nice race. But then we also had the the mid America deal. The visions event at a Jay Oklahoma at mid America off road. Mid America offer. Yeah, that's, that's now in that place. Absolutely amazing. But when it comes to, you know, the finishers or who pushed him I know ultra for carrying to production, but outside of my memory in which, you know, I've slept about a couple times since then, and had a lot of work in between now and then I forgot everything about that. Except for like, I know, I think Bailey rolled I think chip rolled or Yeah, I don't remember exactly how it all went down. But I couldn't find results for for the race at all. And you know, how about how about knockout racing, knocking out their rear axle? race. Did you see those pictures? No, I didn't see any of that. I did. Oh, no kidding. Really? Yeah, man. I saw I saw a trash truck knock the rear axles out from underneath it the other day. On the Beltway, down here in Houston, laid the whole trash truck up on its side and just took all the axles out from underneath it. And I was like, that is some impressive Carnage like James can trail is the only person who might not be impressed with that. So as we launch into this, I'm gonna I want to throw out to Jonathan terhune real quick to him. I know you you've texted me about this and I saw you finally posted something on social media about it might give you the mic for a second to talk about this off roading deal that you're going to try to get everyone back trail wheeling in the middle America area. Give us the 411 on that. Oh,
Unknown:nothing special just the weekend of the 10th through 12th. Basically a couple of us said we should go We'll and actually we said we should go We'll and about two years ago and I finally got tired of talking about it. So I just made an event and invited the entire world So anybody who wants to join a couple of sub bringing some old Willie's down there my my 47 Willie CJ today with me just getting back just to going out on the trails with no schedule at all just having a little bit of fun. It's a good time kind of in between races. It's right after Crandon but that's a little bit different being a holiday weekend so going to a blue collar off road park so anybody that wants to join it's strictly just a show up and go trail riding but anybody's welcome to join us we'll be there for the weekend.
Wyatt Pemberton:Well and I threw that to you because you and I had a discussion just recently about I don't know if the right word is perspective but between right you know all the races and all you know in with inside racing we're we're big guys you know we're adults but at the same time there's a lot of drama and and sometimes that drama can it can be negative it can you know whirlwind and it can suck you down and you know terrible vortex and you and I had a discussion about getting back to getting perspective back and and not letting the drama drag you down and suck you in and ultimately we know what happens it spits you out so that really as you brought that up I thought about Ryan Miller and in Bryan crafts and then Adam shear all the guys that had the you know they're in the new the right around World War Two Willis you know aficionados, I think, you know, Ryan Miller knows more about Willis's, then the wolf's factory but along those lines, you brought your idea I think Nate Jesse has a Willis now too, and, and I start thinking about like, Man, you guys, maybe you guys got it right you guys sit back regain perspective and that allows you to actually go harder when it actually does come back come race time. And I appreciated your insight on that this week. Does that mean you're going to be joining us there? Now I suck. I am so busy with work I need to get I need to get perspective on that. You know that's that's that's the other problem. You know, as we sit here, I'm like a bunch of excuses there, bro. It's about excuses. Everybody's got him just like assholes and man you gotta hold. He said it not me. Well, as we kind of kind of get launched in here want to go back and talk about a couple things that we had races that were we missed, you know, you heard the the mid America offered. I want to go there I'd like to see ultra for nationals end up there at some point not that the West Coast likes coming to Oklahoma. But from what I saw there was a lazy river that you can float around in there was you know, nice bathrooms. I don't know from everyone I talked to said you know that event in and of itself being a week long event and concerts every night. That if we had nationals there obviously wouldn't mirror that or match that. But and obviously there's no way to make it nationals be in July. So. So odds are that it wouldn't be the same type of atmosphere. But they did say it was you know, a world renowned facility that you just can't be like there's nothing nothing remotely like it. And And on that note, I'm gonna kick it over to chip mcglothlin I think chip jumped up here because he had some insight on on Mau forest chip. Hey, Wyatt, how are you sir? Man, I'm here. Give us stuff. Give us your rendition of how the visions event went because I remember before it even went off a year before it went off you you were pushing it. You were inside that inner circle. And now that we have you know, we've got a few weeks under our belt after it walk us through what you thought about the event how it went off and and then how you did?
Unknown:Well. First off I sorry, I'm on here late. We're unloading stuff here in Sturgis, but you know that vision work. What they're doing. They're just overall not even with ultra poor but just as a park in itself, man. They knocked it out of the park. It was eight nine days worth of events every day. They stretched it out where you can make it around. Each one not get tired. We kind of ended up the, you know, the latter part of the week. we raced on Friday. Jc went out there set up a really cool, short course that they had been using for the side by sides. The jumps weren't really great for, you know, the big cars on it, but you know, we manage them and then he put us a mile in the woods. And, you know, it was great practice for us. You know, we're going to here Sturgis this week, and then we got granted in the month. That's what we went out there for but you know, the payout was amazing. It was $10,000 for first place, 6000 per second, and three for third and we came home with second third. We might have had first and second. But you know, things don't always go to plan we've lost breaks gratinated five laps in. Zandi actually smoked a motor didn't even know the motor was blown. So we got home. But everybody raise clean, it was a lot of fun. They had lazy rivers, they had AC DC tribute band out there, they had all kinds of different bands out there. For us to go to an event like that, you know, the payout was a lot more than what we do with, you know, like regional events with ultra for not a knock on anybody. But it was worth going. I was kind of surprised. There wasn't more people that showed up. But the track was amazing. When it comes around next year. It's gonna be way bigger. They had, you know, trials and tribulations of a first event. And they're learning from it. They took criticism, well, they asked for feedback. And it's just going to get bigger and badder. And it's a cool deal. And you know, JT and Alan and, you know, there was a whole lot of Voltron for guys down there working the event. Like all the events, were watching sling breakout world record for the longest mega truck jumped 225 feet. I think it was just amazing. It was it was action all week and never got bored. You got hot, you wouldn't gotten full. And here's the poll early$2 Yeah, they were cheap. When we went there a year, you know, right out a year ago, they were free but you know, the government came down and said can't get free beer. But yeah, it was cheap. I mean, there was vendor food vendors everywhere. I mean, I've never been to a park like that. I mean, you go break something a UTV and go to the power store place and buy whatever you need to get up and going again. So that would be back.
Wyatt Pemberton:Well don't go over chip because I want to talk to you about cuz about your store just because you are boots on the ground up there for one of the guys that are logged in logged on that is that is there right now. So don't go anywhere. Okay, hang with us. We'll do All right. Well,
Unknown:I do your guy had started that long thread in talent tank insiders on on that event before it went off so as somebody with an event background and looking at what they were undertaking I was watching that pretty closely and I've got to say hats off to them for first year event. I had lots of little birdies telling me all sorts of stuff about what was happening out there and and overall I mean for for what they took on it was more than a 10 ring circus and that is not easy in the first year. And it sounds like they really they really pulled off a lot sounds a little bit like they might make it a little bit tighter next year I'm hearing that maybe not eight or nine days maybe more like four or five days but I just because I started that thread I did want to just say hats off to those guys for what they what they were able to make happen out there.
Wyatt Pemberton:Yeah, the stuff I saw they absolutely look like they killed it I can't imagine doing that many days I mean, you know how many days we do at hammers of racing and that's that's just a killer in and of itself but I yeah, Chip thanks for giving us the full one. I mean, it seemed like a good good event and and the coverage was was really good. Obviously it was our own ultra 1404 crew that was handling production which was which surprised me I expect to see more push from them but I didn't I just didn't see it up anywhere Maybe it was because they were focused on getting this event going because there's a lot on the line with potentially you know 700,000 people you know going by your front door at an event so I can see where that's going but yeah so so Tennessee I hate going back and looking at who picked who for what for for that event but the the guys who we expected to win kind of did the one that absolutely I got to give a shout out to I mean, we knew we knew Bleiler was going to be good and 4400 I mean that's kind of a no brainer East Coast race but uh, but Cade rod, Cade rod takes his his limited car, his EMC car which not a lot limited about that car except for 30 sevens and, and 340s on it and went to Tennessee and puts that thing in second mpg. And I found that to be very impressive, but it also it also lays it out there for guys like you know, someone else who's in a Miller chassis, who lives in the state of Michigan. who talks a lot of slack and I call the number one sandbagger. It really lays it out there for him that how competitive he would be in 4400 as well which we tell him that all the time so hopefully he looks to make the modifications. I think he jammed his chassis up pretty bad there so I think he's having to cut off the front of his car and and now maybe it's gonna be 4400 capable. I think he had a shot, shot placement issue on that car. And of course, you guys know I'm talking about Casey Gilbert, and one sandbagger.
Unknown:You know, Wyatt k did amazing, he qualified, you know, he went out there, he pulled the first place pole. I started behind them, unfortunately, I got shot out, you know, I had car problems, like one mile in, but I watched him go by every lap. I got to hang out with JT out on the lap, you know, and watch everybody go racing, not me. But he was he was getting everybody hell, and he did amazing. And he even came to visions. And when I had brake problems, he took over lead and he was running away from everybody and then ended up ripping, I think was a driveshaft bracket off the frame and took out the transmission and some other things. It was really, you know, just bad luck, Leo, but I'm really proud of that good. He's coming up and I'm enjoying the smack talk with them and enjoying what he's doing for the sport. I mean, how you can bring a 4800 car and go compete against AI s cars and all these other things. You don't have to go spend a half a million dollars on a car to go race.
Wyatt Pemberton:His car is not cheap, though. I mean, it is a is the cutting edge car that they've they're kicking out at Jimmy's and, and you're right, absolutely, from a driver's perspective. He is coming into his own. He's been really good for a bunch of years. But you know, as you know, every mile behind the wheel under green flag is is going to be an advantage. And he's getting there and he's actually getting there. And on that note, I see no reason why he won't be very early off here in this this fall season on the talent tank. I haven't had him on yet. And I've talked to him about it so I can see you know, that's that's the carrot here in the beginning of this show. We'll get Kade on we need to talk to him. All right. I want to give a shout
Unknown:out from Tennessee the five drivers that finish the entire all the laps on the race. Obviously Bleiler was first but Cade was second, Miller third, Porterfield fourth and Ted Tao Curran fifth, I thought it was really cool to see that those five made the entire race it was absolutely brutal on a lot of cars. And I just like to mention those five because I said last time I wanted to pick somebody besides Bleiler and Miller, and I picked Cade, Porterfield and Gallagher is my top three so I thought was pretty cool. Those guys are darn near got the podium like I call this nice job guys. Don't that don't feel sorry for Docker. He took the $10,000 home
Wyatt Pemberton:Yeah, I did. That's the only one I could remember. Like how that went down. which is which is absolutely great for him. Hey man zandy broke a top 10 out of Tennessee so you've got to be happy with that right chip?
Unknown:Oh, I am so stoked he you know he's a team owner there's a whole lot of smack talk that nobody gets to see between he and I we both make each other better drivers and you know when we went down to the first lab you know we kept hearing him on as he went by and he had a problem I think it's been a while I slept since and I think it was 12 laps or something whatever it was like nine laps and he broke a king pan on the top of the axle and they actually were able to get it back into the make it three miles in really rough terrain Mecca back into the pit. Bang a welded kingpin out replace it and out in 30 minutes and still came out with a top 10 and you know, those guys, everybody jumped in Bailey was there he had a problem with his motor, which is a lot of jokes about that, but
Wyatt Pemberton:I was just gonna say like if we're gonna give that like like the Bad News Bears bad luck award for an event. It clearly goes to Bailey Cole, right?
Unknown:Yeah. And if the people that don't know what what happened he he smoked Friday, he Yeah, Friday he takes off a qualifier and he smokes a motor, which nobody really saw was Thursday night on the way to dinner. The spare motor literally fell out of the back of the truck and rolled four times down the highway 60 miles an hour it hit every corner of that block, including the heads the block, I mean, it was it was bad and you know just to rub you know salt in the wound. We're sitting here trying to figure out how to get him back on because nobody wants to win in the pits. And I walked up and I'm like so your car gonna be sponsored by Max traps when we get home and he just looked at him like what you soon right now
Wyatt Pemberton:I deserve it should be should be our rod you know we'll talk about Berger in a moment with a right yeah should be Chris l rod l rod straps. I mean, free free marketing right here for our poor Bailey. But yeah, to see, you know QB dollars just bouncing down the freeway behind you in the in the rearview mirror.
Unknown:right he had he had bad luck and visions too. He rolled pretty hard and qualified. car was okay took off. And then like in the second third lap, he lost oil pressure on that motor. And I know when my guys went up there to get some other stuff Saturday. his crew was still there. Like four days ago. I don't even know what day it takes Wednesday, four or five days ago still in Oklahoma waiting for their motor to get back from Oklahoma. And I hadn't seen them show up here today yet but I'm hoping they get things back together we go race
Wyatt Pemberton:Yeah, and you're off to the races. I mean, literally off to the races. Go let me go into this. Let me go into the talking points. You know, I didn't see him on here but he supplies it to me anyway. miles has a twist you know the voice of hammer town Wilson voice of over four miles and I you know, tight Europe together here grew up same talent should say we grew up together. He's way younger than me like five years. So I didn't even see him in high school. But this thing Sturgis South Dakota Yeah, I brought up it's it is the biggest world's biggest motorcycle rally. This is the 81st annual if you guys don't know where this thing is, it's in southwest South Dakota. It's near the Montana Wyoming border elevation 3400 feet so you know we're records a mile up so that that may have a little impact to all of us that are like sea level mouth breathers could be a problem right 6800 population possibly you know 700 to a million people visiting there in a pat in the next week. It's going down our race is going down a place called the buffalo chip power Sports Complex so the buffalo chip if you've seen the picture circle around the internet huge metal buffalo with a chip cut out of it as we just had chip on here I think that's probably like his his he's probably wearing shirts that already have that on there. He's He's a fan right if it's gonna have his name, it better be good. But this place it's got bars, showers, houses laundry a general store on site gas station, apparently a bikini beach. I don't know how many drivers I'd like to see the bikini beach but it's probably close to zero, the race itself. So talking to JT him, john, good B and crystal rod bird. They redesigned the track that was out there. And they've they've they've got it, they've got it worked out where they've got a two mile short course. And this will be a heat star race. But on that two mile short course. It's super fast, but it's super technical. There's some good good jumps in there. There's some dropper jumps, berm turns, you got two big tabletops there's a big roller section and then I almost hate to mention it but there's a small rock section and of all this from talking to JT about it he's basically like smart drivers are gonna do good but if you're a little bit reckless, it's gonna own you you're gonna pay the price so as you know the words have been said you can you can't win a race in a corner but you can lose one I think that's gonna get a really come out here. And from what I've seen a picture is there's not a tree around so no chance for anybody hit trees, which you know, coming out of the the Tennessee race there was lots of opportunity hitch freeze and then at visions I saw Bailey did a walk a tree on a downhill so there's certainly that whether it's looking to be mid mid to high 80s so in sunny so it looks to be beautiful. As I mentioned earlier, this is a you know, it's a dual points race right it's the third race for the West. This is the second points race for the North series. I've got the standings for the West series up but I there's no ultra for website you can't really pull it up for for the North, which I don't know like I said is that is that Alan's way of marking it? I don't know.
Unknown:I don't I don't think they have their points up for the North yet. They didn't they the Montana race isn't up yet. Which seems crazy.
Wyatt Pemberton:But as we stand I'm going to read off the west kind of your top 10 where we stand right Brian crosses in first place in the West West points race then JP and rat JP and rival Gomez right on his heels. Those two are tied for for basically second third, shear and fourth Vaughn getting in fifth. Then you got to Bailey and her father Shannon, right on their heels. Then you've got the the young buck Darien Gomez, and then Wayland Campbell and Dan wyrick, kind of wrap out wrap up your, your your top 10. Every single name I list every one of those guys as a formidable contender, and most of them are there for this race. So at that point, we've kind of gone through that stuff. I was go work my way through.
Unknown:Yeah. Why? Yes. Your North only had one race. This is actually the second race to the north. The third North race is going to be crammed in over in labor day.
Wyatt Pemberton:That's right. It's a really so this is the second horse race, right? Yes, the Russell Bailey's
Unknown:you can just go off the Russell Which is Bailey in first john grounds and second bill Coons in third. And then you've got Tom Prendergast and Jade Wickham, rounding out the top fives. And then
Wyatt Pemberton:I think the next the next racer that we've got the race to Montana would be towns in Jordan towns, and he finished seventh. So I think you're I think you're right. I think that's probably the easiest way to look at it since I didn't sort it by that but I do have those guys wrapped up. But yeah, Bailey would be your North guy. And it is cool to see bill Koontz that he did doing so well with the TTB car that Jesse Haines and Bill Coons and in company all built at porch mate, what year was that? Again, like 2010 2011 I know I've talked about JT JT was the factory driver for that Robby Gordon race did a couple times cool back in the fall but also cool to see it it's gonna race this weekend.
Unknown:Yep, so with the series crossing the south and or West I guess it is in the north though the West champion will be crowned this weekend but
Wyatt Pemberton:North won't be until until crane and after crane and right yeah, good stuff. Well let's let's tear into it to whom you are my guy that always keeps me honest on a on who did what when and where as we look at the the entries I'm going to talk about UTV is the it's certainly the class that I know the least about, and the least I understand about. It was nice to see all of our key in the hammers 40 UTV guys that raise 4400 show up at the visions event and spank people, the Miller brothers. Obviously, I'm talking about they actually killed it. Kyle cheney. Good to see those guys out there. racing events like that. Anyway, 4900 I guess, as we look at it, Josh Smith won in Montana. And Jacob mercy was third and I'm just going off guys that are currently on the list that are registered. And then as Zachary Davis was seventh up there, I didn't look at the West points for 4900 Oh, well, here we go. Got it now. Less points. Jacob, mercy and first Josh Smith. And second. We're just talking about those two guys. And that's that's why they float to the top. Josh so Travis Zola anger. I didn't see Travis anyone here he is. He will be there. So he's currently in third in the West points and he will be racing there and Jason sosi saucy is in fourth but I don't see him on the register list. Anyone know that guy? Sorry. saucy. said You said your last name wrong but a last name. I think Cole Clark would be top five use in here in my voice my excitement for UTV. I get it. There's There's 25 of y'all lining up. I know little to nothing about y'all. But I did. I know between Josh Smith, I know john Rance is racing in there. God Yo, Scott sage. I'm a fan of that guy. He's gonna be out there. Jamie McCoy will be there. That guy's a formal contender. He's probably going to be have to be my pick to win. I love my panel. None of you guys are UTV guys, either. We need
Unknown:a UTV guy. hammers. Yeah. The other thing you might want to mention about UTV classes and how that's gonna mix everything up.
Wyatt Pemberton:I actually have no idea how that's going to work. I I actually lost lost following it. When I saw the the message. And you guys even saw me on Facebook, say, you know, what is this message? It's ultra for coming to Facebook to say, hey, we'd like your input, but don't talk about it. On Facebook. I was like, what is what is at? And I knew like Brad level would be wound up about it, like, send me an email. And then let us Let's have a dialogue about it. If that's the way we're gonna go, I get it. There's changes going on in UTV, I don't necessarily know them or know what the difference is. So for me to speak about the goings on with UTV and where they're looking to split classes or add classes, I know it has something to do with the way the pickup points are on the bottom of the chassis and what you can and can't modify. But outside of that, guys, I haven't followed I have no idea.
Unknown:It's kind of simple. It's, you know, I've run my razor twice and hammers and the chassis is pretty much trashed. I mean, let's be honest, they don't make them to go do King hammer. So they're trying to make one class that might end up in 4400, where the full two chassis full custom up to 300 horsepower than another one where there's pickup points that are saying but you can change the you know, James a frame where you can go and do a deal in chassis or make a safer, you know, so I think there's four classes. I have it right in front of me. I see it as a good thing. I don't know if I necessarily agree with the 4400 you know, then running with the 4400 because there's a weight difference, but, you know, if they're built right in there fast enough, then there's no worries about it. They're also a turbo non turbo glass on there. They there's been talk about that, but I haven't seen any particulars on that. And so I can make something newer cars don't have turbos pretty interesting. Yeah. And I agree and I kind of see it like, you know, we started with 4400 you know, King of hammers what back in oh seven and evolved where we have every man challenge we got 4800 we got you know, all these different classes now the utvs are becoming inexpensive ish brings a whole nother you know, genre into our our sport? Well, I think we're gonna have to split it up just like we did the big cars. Man. I think we had 100 and 130 UTV start getting hammered last year.
Wyatt Pemberton:Yeah. But I like where they are going from a competitive standpoint, to a costing standpoint, the fact that you can, you know, let's take one of the Miller, brother Miller brothers cars to replicate one of their cars, you're in the low 100 1000s. Plain and simple, low one hundreds, those guys don't have, you know, over 100 in their cars, they because they're their national champions on many, many levels. And many, many series is over many, many years. So they do get parts sponsored to them. So their cars are, let's say cheaper to them. But at the end of the day, you're talking about barely breaking $100,000 on building your own car, that you could go race UTV at the beginning of the week at King of hammers, and then you can go line up with the 4400s. And clearly we've seen that that's something that's capable, and that they're capable of doing it. Now, am I a fan of that IMAX? Absolutely. Not a fan of that. But I'm not going to step in their way and say that they shouldn't do it. I mean, if they fit the rulebook then Okay, then they then they fit the rulebook. I think that there should be still some weight splits. But, you know, I guess when we want to brag about being unlimited for a drive if they if they meet the rulebook, let them go right, let them race.
Unknown:Yeah, I agree with you. Yeah, I think you didn't mention that vision, you know, the middle boy Shut up. And I'm gonna say those guys can drive their drivers. But Paul Wolf, a rock bouncer showed up in his razor, did the rock bouncing the knockout the, you know, endurance with, I think he did four races. And he didn't end up. You know, I don't think he ended up on a poll. But he gave those boys a run for their money. So, you know, that was quite interesting to see somebody that doesn't do endurance racing, he does. Pretty much all Hill killing, to go out there and, you know, get in a car for over an hour. And really give those guys you know, something to chase. And it was really cool to watch. So I like where the sports going. I'm with you on it. I don't know how I like 4400 with you TVs if I come up, you know, in my car that weighs 5500 pounds or so. And I come up on a car. It's 100 miles an hour and it weighs 2000 pounds. You got to play some physics there guys stay away from the car. problem or?
Wyatt Pemberton:Well, I think you're only gonna, you're really, I think you're only gonna ever cross. I think you're only ever gonna cross that it's on an on a
Unknown:lake bed in the, in the ATVs run the same qualifying course as 4400 qualifying times in one day, pretty close. Yeah, we. So we be the Miller boys on qualifying by like two seconds, but they beat us by like eight seconds on lap times because they can make it through the woods a lot quicker than we could. So it was pretty cool to see that. I mean, like we were, if the classes were together, it would have been a very interesting race.
Wyatt Pemberton:Yeah, no doubt. Hey, Chip, has
Unknown:anybody brought up the issue with the weight difference that when a UTV is trying to pass you and they give you the bumper, you're not gonna feel it? No, but it kind of makes me laugh. I haven't heard it yet. I'd like to see somebody nerf UGV nerf, or try to nerf the 4400 card probably get destroyed. Which
Wyatt Pemberton:brings up the problem.
Unknown:Yeah, I mean, but they're all good talking points. That's where sports going. That's what I like about our sport. It's innovative, and we're trying to encompass a lot of different things. Is it perfect? Hell no, not at all. But we got to go somewhere with it right?
Wyatt Pemberton:As long as we're talking about it just same as you. I mean, you bring it up the How to grandfather in cars that are non competitive and 4400. That probably shouldn't be there. They should probably be racing EMC. But you know, at the same token, we've just seen some EMC cars that that did very well in 4400, against 4400 competition. So I think it's still a track thing I know you guys have, you know, believe that you have some cars, you know, the rear engine cars, I think are the first ones that come to mind that in the MC race, you guys feel they're not competitive, that they can't I'm sorry, in 4400. The the ranging cars aren't convey, but they don't fit into the AMC rules. So we're at this point that they're the retiree level.
Unknown:Yeah. And you know, I'm promoting that rule change. I'm working on that. It's got to be put to a vote, you know, and it's simply a let's allow rear engine cars into the 4800 class. Everything else stays the same. One thing I was worried about is, well, if we allow rear engine cars, does that mean razors can be allowed in the 4800? Well, if we don't allow is, front ends, you know, Gotta be solid axle that digs here of the side by sides. But, you know, we have, you know, a couple of solid actual rear engine cars that could really, you know, change them out, but 30 sevens on them, what single shocks on them, and it does better for the marketplace for, you know, guys want to move up, you know, gets more attention span for people to come by those cars. And, you know, keep our teams going. And well first,
Wyatt Pemberton:for sake of time, and I don't want to cut you off because we're running down to 20 minutes or so left the show. But on that note, you know, Chip you and I've talked about you my version of that, and my version of that is doing away with the classes and everyone qualifies, and you take the top 40 like NASCAR the top 42 cars, or who runs who runs in 4400 everyone else gets shuffled into the other classes and and you go forward and prosper like that. And I look at that as like a relegation, like what you see in like the Premier League and Premier Soccer League in Europe, where there is the ability to take, you know, a historical finishes, historical starts and put yourself in a position that you just because you had one bad qualifier doesn't shuffle you to the back of the limited classes. It just shuffles you down a certain level. But you'd have enough bad qualifiers or enough bad races. Yeah, you could be Lauren Healy and have just you know, or an Eric Miller who's just walking the hammers or a Bleiler and just one and you could be shuffled down into a really good class in and you look at it from like NASCAR perspective, NASCAR does that that's, you know, the fastest 42 or who runs on Sunday, everyone else doesn't have a spot.
Unknown:That's the way this weekend is, I think we've got 31 or 32 entries and 4400 Originally, I heard there'll be 27 going to the main but JT is gonna make it a percentage. So I think that number is gonna go lower. I like that it makes people drive harder. And you know, and smarter. You know, you go and qualify really good and get lucky. Well, you make it to the main here, you got to qualify, then you got to make it through, you know, multiple heat races, right. So you got to keep the car together. So it's a completely different type of racing. And I like it a lot.
Wyatt Pemberton:Well, it gives your limited guys that you're you're I'm gonna say I'm gonna call them small budget guys, I call it limited a bit let's call it limited on budget two guys a chance to be a good driver with not necessarily the best equipment on the road, you know, at the track and a good driver is going to prevail at the end of the day, a guy that knows his equipment knows the limits and he could find himself you're running in the 4400s even though he's a limited driver, and I would say you looking at like a Cade rod in that regard. Or Casey, Casey Gilbert in that regard, where Casey is clearly a he'd be a front running 4400 guy but he sits back and he raises in 40 100 you see what I'm saying? Like it would take away that that sandbagging ability by by going to that go on that route, as that's my idea, but hey, I digress. I want to jump off this we need to we need to get get the ball rolling about this race. We start talking to you TV. I'm gonna jump down to definitely the limited classes. I'm going to talk 44 4500 real quick. You've got Dwayne garretson. Joe mushir john grounds john Matthews lavado and Sean rent senior amin casting I mean grounds, Mexico and Montana he was second. Matthews was first at Montana. Lavasa was third in Mexico. Rance was first at Mexico. So and then Dwayne garretson. Dwayne has like he's got he had to build a separate shop just to house trophy. So this guy, the 4500 just such a tight competition. 4600 man, Albert confreres, like I hit that race. That john Matthews it's in there. Yeah. JOHN Matthews. Yeah, he was first in the blue Jeep down there in the in the crowd. Is he is he is young here.
Unknown:There's a john with a GPS. Yeah, I got Yeah. JOHN just joined us. I'm buying him up. Give me a second here to grab them.
Wyatt Pemberton:I just sent it. I just seen him like
Unknown:john Mather cool. disrupt your whole recording here. But I saw him in there and thought he may be able to give us some good input. That's why
Wyatt Pemberton:it takes a village Well, he and now he's probably not listening. So john Matthews, if you see our invitee Get up, just cut me off in an interrupt. I'd love to get your take on on where the sitting because right now you are the P one in the north. And like I said, we're talking about 4600 before tr Hoon, optimally interrupted. That was a good catch. JOHN. We got Fleming. Alex Fleming. He's sitting second in the north series. JOHN Snell, Josh atterberry. Nick kinson. Shauna Brian, Mike dhamra. Those guys were third in Mexico. Tom Biddle. I don't know who Tom Biddle is but uh, running out the entry list is one of my favorites, man. twitchy McGee he was, uh, he was second Mexico. Hey, Matthews. I see you now you're you're flashing on my screen. How's it going? How are you up in a? I can now Yeah. Are you in Sturgis already? Oh, so you're you're you're on the highway headed that way. Yeah, I have a really bad connection with you. I'm not hearing you at all. Really? Yeah, probably not. I'm gonna mute you and we'll come back. If you get better signal. Let me know. Okay. Yep. All right. So, yeah, 4600 man, you know what I saw and 4600 for this race that was actually kind of shocked me was okay. The guy that was first at Montana, Josh Pat, not there. Brad level was first in Mexico. Not not there. And then Justin Reese. where's where's Reese? On this is Reese on here tonight. Usually he jumps in here so he could tell me if he is uh, I don't see him but kind of kind of shocked to see the two guys that won the last two races, you know, with a north and a West race that aren't even at this event. So not saying this leaves it open. But there's some competition there. Alex Fleming being second in Montana. Snell was third at Montana fourth and Mexico but man, I gotta be pulling for I gotta be pulling for twitchy McGee. He He's due and he's he's been up there. He's danced around he just hasn't put one in p one yet. 40 100 Wow, this this group is tight man. But Jeremy Jones, this is almost his backyard. I mean, this is almost a hometown race for him. That's he was first in Montana. I think I'm gonna go and put him first as well. Steam graph is up in there.
Unknown:Hey, quiet. We just got done spending the last two weeks working on Jeremy Jones's car. I can tell you what he's gonna be fast. Yeah, Cody talked to us about we just took out the Atlas in that car and put in an sts case to see what it would do so Okay, let's leave the car a little less parasitic. Okay. So so he was on fire at Montana. He actually ended up second overall behind Bailey. Yep. So we figured why not give him a little bit extra and see what he can do with the rest of the rest of the crowd there.
Wyatt Pemberton:Well, Cody no thank you for man that's that's why we put the feelers out there get everybody up here. Awesome. That's that's a good piece of information to have. I know we got Jake and going up there. He's good up Murph dog food. Gosh, Chase capoeira. I can't believe I hadn't mentioned that guy's name. Yet on this chases a he is a force to be reckoned with. And then Brett Brett Harrell, Brent Harold Gosh, dang it. I can't pronounce his first name. Brent Harrell, I think I saw was that a chance Holloman chance Solomon's in that group to chance lost lost a wheel off his trailer on the way up there. I saw that I thought I got a good laugh out of that. But Chuck Crossland he'll be in there. He's always in the mix, making it messy. Just Dustin.
Unknown:So why is Chuck is the reason that I'm actually in the boxcar right now. Heading up to Sturgis. Oh, yeah. So truck Chuck has a blown motor still. And he's given what he rose. Derrick Trent steps on the opportunity to go drive because number this weekend up in Sturgis. So we went out and did the NorCal race or the two weeks ago and did really well there. And he said, You know, I kind of need somebody to take my spot. So I can say in the series points. So that's why we're heading up to Sturgis right now. And what he's going to be driving is driving up there I shot. Oh,
Wyatt Pemberton:that's awesome. That's Yeah, that's awesome. Good for Woody. Well, that brings us to the point of the conversation where we want to talk about 4400
Unknown:back to 4800. Real quick, though, wasn't Levi surely 4800. Because the red is down. Levi surely
Wyatt Pemberton:is not on the interent list. If he's racing, I haven't seen it.
Unknown:He made some noise that he was coming. Yeah. So he was heading somewhere. And I'm assuming he's got 48 car with him. But is it possible that he's racing in 45? I hope he did. I hope he brings 4400 but there's also that chassis that he got from Europe, and I don't know where that's the butler car.
Wyatt Pemberton:Yeah. I haven't talked to Levi in quite a while actually. That's actually again, that's on me. But I'm looking at the official list as of two hours ago that shows all the insurance in Levi's not listed. I'd love to see him back. Back on the list after everything he's gone through. 4400 Let's do this. Let's jump into this man. You know, we talked about the points race earlier who's sitting in it? We've got 31 cars. You know, you've heard from chipper earlier. His other guy. man who's the wind Do you want us chip? Chip muted just jump. Well, I mean, we've got the Gomez's going we've got all the Campbell's heading out there. We got Vaughn we've got Lauren. Those do those two dudes man. I swear if I wouldn't know anything about the Ford Bronco, if it wasn't for Lauren Haley. I don't know if how everyone else feels about that. But that guy is wheeling a bronco every weekend or he givin people rides and Broncos. Not that for sponsors as they don't. I will gladly take a bronco if they want to send one this way, but I'm sitting here looking at with the doors off top top. Yeah, he's definitely been out in this thing. Yeah, I think they were just on the Rubicon just took the family and that was their that was the getaway trip. I love it, man. So going through the list, you know? So I'm not going to pick your chip. You're kind of do we keep saying that that you're due for 4400 race but the field is so freakin stack. You got Bailey Cole up there. You just came off the Montana when he's had to really lackluster appearances at Tennessee and vision and visions. Bill Koontz I gotta say he's probably going to be one of my guys to be in the in the top 10 with that TTB car great Montana appearance. Bailey Campbell can't not Bailey up Bailey is forced to be reckoned with especially short course she's really brutal. She takes some she takes some very calculated fast chances on short course stuff. As we talk about the course it's a two mile short course very technical in the sense but didn't have trees. So it's gonna be fast. I mean, you have to look at young you have to look at guys like Paul horschel and Lauren Healy, long getting those are the those are the cars that are gonna get after it.
Unknown:He's uh, you know, I've been around Of course, on the Grom there's a lot of blind jumps that come into curves. There's, it's really technical. I mean, it's a short course. But if you don't study the track, you're gonna get in trouble. And you know, I don't mind you don't pick on us for you know, when, but I was looking at the list yesterday when I was on the way up here and we got 31 people coming in here. And there is a I haven't seen a stack race with this many heavy hitters in a race in a long time, a long time. The other side of that is, it could be you know, I sound like miles when I say this is like it could be anybody's race. You gotta keep your car together. There's some rocks in this thing there. They're pink rocks, oddly enough, JT and eggs are gonna come apart, but you know, it can tear up a car pretty easily and some of these technical terms you go into one blindly trying to pass them by, you're off in the weeds and you can roll easily. I mean, I'm sitting here looking at the course and it's not an easy course well and as you bring it up you
Wyatt Pemberton:right now right here right now on this chip is exactly it tight technical course when you're going wheel the wheel in these heat races leading up to this, you stand the very, very high risk chance of cartwheel and somebody or cartwheeling yourself if you guys make go inside outside on tires
Unknown:I see it happening 100% I hope everybody stay safe and you know drive smart. But you know this is the world we live in it's gonna happen and you know, I hope it's not me and if it is I know we all walk out safely but you know the the front of this course it's you know three four cars why'd you get in the back it gets down to one lane and it's only two miles so let's say there's 25 cars are starting to mean you know that's it's gonna be a tight race.
Wyatt Pemberton:I mean, I think it's gonna be harder than Reno I mean on the cars because Reno you can spread out I don't know what the mileage was in Reno. But you know this one we're all stacked up with each other and there's no way you're gonna get away from anybody feels longer if this feels longer than than Reno but maybe, maybe not I'd have to go back and look at notes on that mean you guys are going to be the ones who obviously know that better. No worries Well, on that note if you guys kind of heard heard my take you've got all the heavy hitters and chip I appreciate you what you had to say here because this type of race this event really kind of dictate a kind of leans toward not indicates it leans towards that pitch that I rolled out earlier to you guys but a chip and I've talked about this in in egnazia models about and j team as well. About qualifying for for starting position. But qualifying basically for class like which they you race on based on your standings, so to speak, versus this canon I Fs car run in a limited class or a rear engine or whatever. No, we just take that in my book, it doesn't matter as long as you're the best driver and equipment together. You can do I mean, if you're really good driver, you can get away with junkier equipment. Or if you're, you know, a really terrible driver. You need the nicest equipment out there. Like you know a bunch of these guys. Yeah, that was a low blow.
Unknown:Yeah, no, I got it. One of the other cool things I don't know if anybody heard about it, and we just heard about it today. But they're really trying to promote this race here at the buffalo chip and from talking to Alan earlier they gave away 15 spots on a radio to come drive with a professional driver. So pretty much all the guys with two seat cars were going to be taken guy you know, many women who've never seen this sport, we're going to go take them around the track. We're going to put them in the car with a helmet on them and we're you know, we're not going to race speed but we're going to go and let them experience what we're doing. And then they have the the concerts going I think we got Kid Rock Sunday night here. They're going to Give away more spots. So there's going to be like 30 people introduced in a very real way to this Sport Plus their families and friends, because you know, they'll take selfies or whatever, because I think it's really cool what they're, you know, ultra for is trying to do here as a, you know, promotions and get the word about who we are. You know, that's something I have never seen him do before. So I thought that was pretty cool. Well, it's
Wyatt Pemberton:good for the teams in the marketing and in the opportunity to put yourself out there and sign you know, sign autographs, you know, kiss babies and shake hands. But the one thing that I actually had a nose to bring up was the parade on on Friday night, you guys are doing a parade, I've seen it listed two places is 6pm. And 7pm. I'm not sure if the the time on that who's listened to that kick her correct me. But even on wet ultra force website, I've seen it in two places different times, it may be listed as 6pm, because that's what time ultra for wants the drivers to line up. But the seven that's that was my guess why I see two different times. But chip, do you have any insight in on that parade and the route you guys are taking.
Unknown:So we've got you know, Danny and I have been here the past three years we were here with you know, other organizations. So this didn't our first time here. In the past, we just did a parade through the buffalo chip, we go through to make a bunch of noise drive the cars through the camp. This time, we're actually going up to the main stage, and we're actually going to park the cars, where everybody would stand to watch say like kid rockers ZZ Top, which I think it's pretty cool. They're going to be here still. And all the fans, you know, people here that don't know who we are, you're gonna come up and get like, look at the cars, touch the cars and ask questions. And so we're going to be there for a little bit. It'll happen after qualifying. I don't know the exact times and I really don't think ultra for does either. But it's a really cool promotions type race for us.
Wyatt Pemberton:And on that note, Mitch, what, Mitch, you, you and Paul horschel are out there. I know. You're sitting up here, Mitch, give me the 411 from Neil's perspective, or not Mitch? Yeah, he's being secretive. He's actually raised his hand. I knew exactly what he wanted to talk about, because I did bring up Portugal and what they have going, but uh, well, there he is. Ah,
Unknown:sorry, I'm trying to figure out how to use this thing. Yeah, we're with Paul, we're in the voter are just driving cross country. We're pretty excited to go race surges. We got everything all fixed up after that. tumble in Mexico. We got some new front suspension on there a little lighter. We got the car all set up for short course everything's running really good. So we're looking looking forward to having them having a fun time with all their friends down there.
Wyatt Pemberton:And that's awesome. So any any insight from you guys? Like what's your what is what's Paul feeling?
Unknown:I'm just excited to get back racing. Again, we've had extractions. Lately with we're building a new shop out there. We're working on design a new car for the hammers. Just trying to get ready for next year, we put a lot of time into prep, this race, truck, just spare parts. just telling her everything it takes to go race these races across countries. So yeah, we're just looking forward to getting out there and having a good performance.
Wyatt Pemberton:You guys crank out new cars quicker than anyone out there like to not be a production shop. It's It's impressive what you guys are you and Paul are able to do.
Unknown:Yeah, I appreciate that. We try really hard. We just hired another guy full time to help us. And so looking, looking forward to that he's been helping us on the weekends for a couple years now. But now he's helping us full time. So it takes a lot of stress off me and just it's helped help get everything done all week long. So Nice, nice.
Wyatt Pemberton:Well, I mean, if you guys are hiring, like I will throw myself out throw my hat in the ring, because I would love to like live in Park City, but I really wouldn't be much for the work part. But if I could just come and just live in Park City. I'd be alright with that.
Unknown:Yeah, you're welcome. anytime anybody is hoping to see you when you came through to Jackson here a couple of months ago. But once I get this, everything's pretty tight right now. We have a knock a couple buildings down to get this new building built. So once we get this new building up here in the next couple months, we should be whole production getting ready for the hammers. And should be really nice once you get this new building
Wyatt Pemberton:up. Awesome. Well, thanks for thanks for that big Mitch. Yeah. All right. Well, good luck this weekend. All right, guys. So I know I didn't have everyone handicap races like we normally do. But my alarms gonna go off here in a minute, but I know after I edit everything down, it ends up being a little bit, you know, less than an hour, so I'm just going to cheat. We're going to go over as far as the handicap, but we're only going to handicap 4400 if you are up here on the top Off the top of the list or whatever expect probably to get called on I won't call on everybody, but if you have ones that you want to talk about absolutely, Cody, no, Cody 4400 race. They asked you to handicap it. Who you got? Who's your top three?
Unknown:I think Brian Krause is gonna go out there hard. It's the Gomez is are there I would say probably one of the Gomez is going to win. Those guys have been fast and running a lot at the Nortel series. I don't know if they're going or not. I'm going to say, one of the Gomez's crops. All three registered. Oh, yeah. This is telling me all three are registered and racing knows more about what's going on in 4400 than I do. And Bailey, Bailey Campbell. Bailey camel is gonna be I think there's gonna be Brian. Oh, man, I
Wyatt Pemberton:want that too. Like, it's all good stuff. And on the Campbell notes, Wayland, Wayland had his his his wife, girlfriend, fiance. I don't know what that officiel whatever it is with those two. But they had their second baby today. So you know that's, that's, that's congrats to them. That's that's pretty awesome. So when you guys you guys see Wayland in Sturgis. You got to high fiving that he's probably got one of the coolest wives ever to give birth. She's still at the hospital and he is on the road to go race. That's that is some dedication. Hey, Dom Balducci. Dom Are you listening? I know you're up here at the top. I know you did a lot of work on cades car. You're listening. Jump on here and we ask you asked you say Hey, get the 4400 raise. Nate Jesse. I know you're up here too. Okay, there we go. Make sure when me Nate, you listen to do a ton of editing to cut you fuckers out. All right, Nate. Jesse. Why Yeah, I
Unknown:hear you. Now you guys cut out for a minute. So I think my three for this race. I'd say helium the top spot horschel number two and I'm gonna go to chip at third man watched him at the visions race. He raised a hell of a race there. I think he's gonna do wonderful on this one too. So chip, I got you for third. Thank you, sir.
Wyatt Pemberton:All right, Chris. May Chris. Chris is on here. We hadn't had him talk yet. macoris 4400 race.
Unknown:I want to see Bailey. Cole do pretty good. With all the bad luck he's had so I'm gonna put him up there. And definitely Lauren heliyon just big power ifns is gonna win out on that short course.
Wyatt Pemberton:Got it. And then we had had him talk yet but uh, Justin wicks Justin find me Yeah, what's what's your call to handicap the 4400 race
Unknown:so I think if Lauren is driving to single seater he's gonna be real tough to be I'm gonna say horschel and second and JP your role and third
Wyatt Pemberton:no disagree for me and then a Shannon or Todd Which one of you guys want to go first?
Unknown:Oh, go nobody said McNamara I'm sorry. Compare yet and short course this I was just talking to good Be and he says it's 2.2 miles. And it's tight and technical. That sounds to me like NorCal so I'm going to put confer up there. I don't know which one of the Gomez brothers I'm going to pick but I'm going to put a Gomez brother up there. Um, you know what, Lauren Healy has been doing short course longer than most of these guys. I'm going to put Healy up there too. That's my pick. That's That's good. Todd. Yep. There you go. I hear you now. All right, sorry. I gotta go. I gotta say it a little weird. I gotta go with Warren Healy Campbell chassis, and one of the Gomez brothers if they can keep it together.
Wyatt Pemberton:Yeah, I think that's I think that's fair. From my from my end, I'm gonna I'm gonna do my three and then we'll bail out of here. Cody Addington. I'm gonna I'm gonna put coding up there. I like Cody here. I'd like Cody and you know, the red dragon. I think he's he's hungry. He's due for for some stuff here. In a UFO car. Man. Dan, why rate? I put wire in there. I know why this is a bucket list race for him. And that's why, you know, they loaded up and they headed out to this race. So he's on 37 two, by the way. Oh, wow. Okay, you I mean, definitely keep the RPMs up there. And then Jason Blanton. I hope he's there. I saw he his name in the list. Blanton is rudely fast if he keeps the thing together. So those are my I basically went three dark horses. I don't know where they're going to be if I get you know, the trifecta up there, but those are the three that I'm kind of a fan of. Why Rick Blanton Yeah. And Cody Addington. Anyway. Well, guys, ladies, everyone. Thank you so much for tuning in for another session of the talent tank bench racing ultra for racing and The race that we're covering is this is the Black Hills throw down at the buffalo chip wow crazy event looking forward to it. Well, everybody on that note don't go anywhere. I'm going to stop the record and and we will have a another discussion.
